Animation Designer:

If you create an animation and send us the generated text file, we'll play it live! on the sign. The software will generated a .txt file in the same directory as the software is run. Send us the file and you can have your 15 minutes of fame =).

The Animation Studio was written in VB6 and is just a modified version of the software used in this project.

Technical Summary:

An 100cm x 80cm (10x8) LED matrix display.

Control Computer: P3 600Mhz, 128MB Ram, Ubuntu Server 7.10
connected to
P16F628A PIC Microctroller via Serial (with MAX232A chip)
connected to
(4) MAX6957 LED Controllers (20 Ports Each) controlled via SPI interface
connected to
(80) Super Bright LEDs (18,000mcd)

The control computer is running custom software written in C and C++. The PIC microcontroller takes serial data from the PC and writes SPI commands to the LED Controllers. The PIC was programmed in assembly. Each LED is current controlled and can illuminated to 17 different brightness levels (16 current levels + off).

 

Who Did This?

The concept was conceived in Fall 2007. The concept was made reality in Winter 2008 by Jon Bennett and Yuchen Luo.

Very cool idea but we had a few problems trying to actually go to the site! The text of the URL is a bit hard to read on the sign. First we mistaked the "i" for a "1" and then the "g" for a "9". Just so you know!

Nice job guys, I noticed the sign a few days ago as I was walking out of UWP. Now I understand why you guys are never in class. Keep up the good work.
